This is what I spent my day painting on September 11th. I didn't choose it to be intentionally morbid, or anything like that, it just happened to work out that way. These aren't actual false teeth, but a soap set that was given to me as a gift. I can't bear to use them as soap, so I decided to paint them instead!

Another in my daily painting series. This little teapot was given to me by my mom. I have a small obsession with teapots, and a larger obsession with small, cute objects, so this killed two birds with one stone. I am trying to paint more loosely, more freely, and to let the painting process feel more joyful and less pain-staking.

I've begun doing daily paintings again. I recently have had many transformative moments, including turning 31 and getting married, which have helped me to refocus on painting, and creating. A friend of mine made the comment to me "we have so few days." I haven't been able to get this out of my head. It has really made me think, and it echoes within me daily. So, here I am, back at the easel, striving to create something, and take advantage of each day I am given.

Happy New Year! I have big plans for 2011. I turned 30 this past summer, I am getting married this coming summer, and after what feels like an eternal hiatus, I am back to making art.

I have been reading and following The Artist's Way, which has been enormously helpful in getting me back into the swing of things.

This painting was an emotional rollercoaster for me, which is probably the main reason I didn't finish it. I struggled with feeling too studious and academic throughout the process, to the point where I just wasn't enjoying myself anymore. Add to that the fact that I was struggling to survive spending the New England winter living with my parents! I'm lucky I got this far! I will be posting new work regularly again, and I am going to start experimenting with some new ideas, so stay tuned!

Six more hours of work. I'm really, really trying to vary the hue, value and chroma with every stroke, AND make shapely strokes. It is very tiring. But amazingly fun.

Day five of form painting...I misinterpreted the way the cheek was rolling into the light, which I only figured out afterwards. I fixed it up a bit, but I still don't like the way it looks. Oh well, c'est la vie.

This is a 12-ish hour drawing I did of Eliza this week. I absolutely adored this pose, and she is a great model. She totally looks like a superhero. I feel like I started to absorb and apply a lot of ideas I've been struggling with in this drawing, so that felt good.

This is the landscape painting I started today. It's basically the view of my neighbors' house from my front porch. It's mostly still in the underpainting stages, and I did a really quick, sloppy underpainting. I started working back into the two pine trees on the left side of the painting, and the house, but then it started to get cold out. Hoping I'll be able to work on this tomorrow after work...This measures 9"x9".

This is my first attempt at using charcoal and white chalk on tinted paper. It was actually pretty fun. I never draw with charcoal because for some weird reason I was scared of it.

Oh, I know why - because before I went to Studio Escalier, no art teacher had ever bothered to tell me that I could sharpen it like a pencil, so I was always drawing with a dull stump of charred vine.

Anyways, I totally look like a nutty professor in this one, and I think it's pretty funny.

This was my first attempt at painting monochromatically. I only used raw umber and white for this. It was a lot harder than I was anticipating, and it took a lot of re-working in order to get it to look like I wasn't a cyborg or a shiny silver alien or something.

I do kind of like the old photograph feel to it. It's creepy.

I'm getting there. I fixed the eyes tonight, which made me feel a lot better about the whole thing - also changed the lips slightly, and finished painting the background.

Weekend Painting Extravaganza

This is what I did this weekend. I still have to do the hair, the headband, one ear, and a good amount of background. And, I'm probably going to end up working back into the face again because there's some things I'm not happy with.

I do have to say though, I am actually really enjoying painting in the bathroom. It's a tiny little nest with no distractions. And the space heater makes it very cozy!

Still not totally happy with the drawing but I will fix it in the second pass. I swear I spent so much time "underpainting" the face that it's basically just, um, painted.

Here's the latest self portrait I just started. It's going to be an 8"x8" painting. It's my reflection in my bathroom medicine cabinet.

Keep in mind that my entire bathroom measures about 2 1/2 feet wide by 6 feet across, so squeezing my easel in there is...fun?

Two posts in one day! I posted the underpainting, then went on an all day painting spree (it's like a killing spree with less casualties) and this is where I left off.

Form painting is like crack. I couldn't stop. I kept coming back for more. I painted for six hours straight. So. fun.

Just finished the underpainting, so I wanted to post it so I can start the second pass this afternoon. Not super happy with it, but I'll fix it up in the second pass.

The problem I find with underpainting is that I get so excited about doing the second pass that I start slopping paint down to get the underpainting over with, which kind of defeats the purpose of doing the underpainting in the first place...

Here is the preliminary drawing and quick paint study for the self portrait I'm working on. Both pretty rough, but it's a start. Wearing a winter hat, hoodie, and fur lined vest is a way better idea than going naked!

The painting study is 2.5" x 3.5" and the drawing is 5"x7". The final painting will be 5"x7". Wish me luck!

Here is the painting I am currently working on. I decided to finally approach one of my biggest fears: printed fabric. Of course, I ended up choosing an insanely complicated, irregularly patterned, wrinkled silk scarf. (Slaps forehead) Here are photos of day one and two of the underpainting.

I pretty much never say this about my own paintings, but I can actually say that I love this painting. I totally got in the zone while painting it. The key is drinking a latte on the drive home from work. That keeps me painting for a solid six hours.

I did an underpainting with this one, which I haven't done with my other small paintings.
